You coming? To add yourself, click "Edit" and use password: j311y ... ("j", three, one, one, "y")
Where:
Who's coming
- name, when you'll be there, where you're from
- Dusty Reagan, probably 8ish, Austin TX, (I'm the short-ish, scruffy guy. Probably wearing a newsy hat or fedora. :)
- Drew Jones (Birmingham, AL & Austin, TX)
- Maggie Duval, be there all day (as co-producer and host of the Lance Van de Kamp show!), Austown, TX
- Sumina Bhatti - 8ish as well. I am the Indian chick and I look... well Indian! Probably hanging out with Dusty :)
- Christine Henry Andresen - (I've been looking for a group like Jelly, I'm going to have to start coming to the weekly cafe group things) As for 3/10, not sure time I'll get there, but black curly hair, glasses, and very possibly a sparkly dress-up outfit to go with the Plutopia theme!
Who might come
- Sarah Vela, hoping to be there 8-ish but need to secure babysitting first, yo. Having trouble with that...I'm the one with the sparkling personality, and an Austinite.
What?!

As many of you may already know, a group of futurists, artists, hackers, and builders are putting together a very cool party, using the name Plutopia - which is the name of the collaborative network working on the party, and also the name attached to the party. This is the eighth version of the annual EFF-Austin party that many of you most likely have attended in all of its various manifestations. We give a great party and we get great attendance. And it's all for good causes: EFF-Austin, a nonprofit focused on education about technology and related policy, throws the party, and it highlights the work of other nonprofits, like the national Electronic Frontier Foundation, Creative Commons, and the regional Digital Convergence Initiative.
Plutopia is also hosting Jelly at the event, making it a home away from home meetup space for Jellies worldwide!
The event will be heavily promoted on a number of fronts, so expect a lot of pre and post buzz about it. People are grokking already that this is not just another "eat appetizers, get drunk and watch a band" Southby after party. Plutopia is an experimental, experiential, immersive happening featuring art, music, speakers, two talks shows (one, The Heather Gold Show featuring Ev Williams, Twitter founder) and more. And have I mentioned The ArcAttacks and their singing Tesla coils? And our Guy Juke (legendary Austin music/event poster creator, musician and all-around eccentric genius) original, collectible poster?
The theme is a "utopian science fiction realm" (vs. hyperreal dystopian) as envisioned by a cadre of artists orchestrated by Randy Jewart and Austin Green Art, and among the many things I'm excited about is a talk given by one of my personal heroes, Bill McKibben, author of the book Deep Econonomy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future.
I know many of you Jelly geeks will not want to miss (and experience for yourself) the very last showing of Brian Park's legendary flogiston chair, the virtual reality chair featured in Lawnmower Man. Brian notes that:
This will be the last time I'll show this chair in public. It's over 17 years old and shows it. It's had famous bums in it - Timothy Leary, Brian Eno, Magic Johnson (!) others less so - Thomas Dolby, astronauts, and thousands of others....shown in New York galleries, numerous magazine articles, been used in NASA zero G simulators, been seen on CNN, and shown at many exhibits and conferences. So it's had an interesting life. I had thought of re-upholstering it for the show, but with a skin like that, how could I? I designed it to fit me, so it's always been my chair, and I like its memories. It has a twin in NewYork that was built at the same time, and was recently rehung. My chair has never been shown in the suspended version, it's true design, so that is how we will do it for the show. I'll be suitably attired.
This year the party will be larger than ever, and we still need sponsors! I know many Jellys don't have a lot of money to spend, but Plutopia's open to any level of contribution (starting at $100), preferably $500 and up. Sponsorship info (and what you get for it) is here: http://plutopia.org/?page_id=4. It would bring me great joy to place articles on all the grassroots support from Jellys who supported this party. I would love to highlight that we are a rapidly growing "force" to be reckoned with...
We also need volunteers to help us with ticket, t-shirt and poster sales, to act as "ushers" (sutiably attired as MIBs or "Space Flight Attendants"), general geek fix-it folks, website and graphics maintenance help, etc.
For more information on sponsorship or volunteering (or if you have a good art idea that fits our theme) please do not hesitate to contact Maggie Duval: mags@maggiedot.com or phone 512-912-0032.
